Seagull Fashion Show RPG
A downloadable project
Artist Statement
Concept: You play as a seagull at Granville Market in Vancouver, preparing for the annual Seagull Fashion Show. With only three days left, you must steal human clothing and accessories to create the ultimate fashion statement.
Aim: In SFS, no one wins or loses. You play together to create a fashion show for the ages. Players have fun drawing their stylish seagulls and coming up with thievery scenarios.
Tone: SFS is comedic, absurd, and a little chaotic. It's about embracing your inner seagull—free-spirited, mischievous, and extremely fashionable.
Subject matter: There’s nothing in the game that needs content warnings.
After playing a handful of rpgs this semester, I knew I wanted to make my own rpg simple and easy to play. I also knew I wanted to have some sort of animal as my characters and I wanted drawing to be the main mechanic. The seagulls at Granville Market came to mind, as I love their very inconvenient but hilarious food-stealing habits, and decided to make a Dress-to-Impress-style game, but with seagulls!
I pulled on elements of fun from my magpie book, especially focusing on my love for sea creatures (including seagulls!) and playing games with little to no competition—games that are just plain fun and silly.
I wanted to push back on the complicated mechanics and setting-up process from the rpgs we played this semester. Especially with this being a single-page rpg, I wanted the instructions to be clear, both visually and conceptually. I also personally prefer when a mechanic isn’t random, so I had players freely choose what personality type and items they wanted out of a list, instead of having a dice determine it for them.
I hope players walk away from this game with smiles and laughter at their silly seagull creations!
